Lucille Marlot writes in her thesis (June 2014) page 112: “The first poster featuring a devil is again a poster for a Spanish drink, made in Lerida: Anis infernale […]. The influence of the character portrayed by Renaud on the caricature is visible in the poster through the forked fingers, the antennae, as well as the goatee and the imposing nose of the creature. It is a chimeric creature that Cappiello presents here. It is composed of various elements: bird legs, insect antennae, and a pig’s tail, assembled on a humanoid body. The bearded face may refer to a zanni character, a kind of servant, typical of the Commedia dell’Arte. The devil with a broad smile looks at the potential buyer, while pointing with the index finger of his right hand at the product for sale, which he displays with the other hand. The advertising argument here also relies on the contrast of colors, red for the background and the character, and pale green for the typography, as well as the association of the product name: ‘infernal,’ with that of the fantastic character depicted.
