Legend has it that Coty, leaving a meeting with the director of Les Magasins du Louvre who had refused him the opportunity to sell his new perfume La Rose Jacqueminot in their stores, threw a bottle right in the middle of the crowded shop, causing a near-riot as dozens of customers rushed to ask where they could buy it. Les Magasins du Louvre accepted the perfume, and over 500 bottles were snatched up in a few days. Other department stores followed. Within four months, Coty had earned his first million. Oil is said to have beneficial properties for hair. In 1885, Geneva native Charles Jean Guillaume Hahn came up with the idea of combining it with a hair lotion, which became Pétrole Hahn. The product is now manufactured in Reims by the company Eugène Perma.
